Managing Stress During Troubling Times

If you’re anything like us, then lately you have probably found yourself saying or thinking, “There is a lot going on.” Every time you turn on the news, read the paper, or scroll on social media you are bombarded with stories of heartbreak, tragedy, loss, violence, or pain. Not to mention, you may have things that you are going through in your own life or with people closely connected to you. All of these factors combined can create a lot of stress in our lives.

In the times that we are living in, we must remember what Jesus says in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Then in a couple chapters over, He says, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Although the things that we see, hear, or experience can be shocking at times, the Lord is never caught off guard or by surprise. And the mere fact that He has allowed us to be alive during this time in history means that He will continue to make sure that we have all that we need to withstand any storm. Now more than ever, it’s important that we anchor ourselves in Him. We cannot fall prey to the world’s ways of coping with stress or allow ourselves to become consumed by fear and worry. We must meditate on the word of God night and day and devote ourselves to the place of prayer for it is in Him that we find our peace. In Phillippians 4:6, Apostle Paul wrote, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6).

In addition to spending more time in the presence of God, it can also be beneficial to put other measures in place to decrease stress. Sometimes we need to consider taking breaks from news and social media outlets. We also need to take time to unwind and relax, find hobbies that we enjoy, spend time journaling, take better care of ourselves by eating healthy and exercising,  spend time with our family and friends, and stay connected to our church community.

Regardless of what’s going on in our lives or around us, God is still good, and He is faithful. We can find peace, hope, rest, and safety in Him and so much more. Be strong and of good courage!
